Why Does Stater Bros. Markets Charge for Bags?

SBM Grocery Bag

The passage of Proposition 67 on November 8, 2016 stipulates the immediate statewide enactment of Senate Bill No. 270 (SB 270) that went into effect July 1, 2015 in certain jurisdictions, placing a ban on single-use carryout bags.  The company is required by law to charge a minimum amount of 10cents per bag for reusable plastic or paper bags that we provide. The funds generated from sale of bags covers the costs require to meet the specifications of the bill.  We encourage our customers to bring reusable bags from home to avoid this charge.  In addition to the reusable plastic or paper bags that can be purchased, customers may also purchase reusable canvas bags for 99 cents.
